First, I know, I have not been writing again.  Consider my hand slapped…

In the last couple of days, I have gotten a couple phone calls from this number and name in caller ID:
(904) 555-0169          Dir Assist FL

The person on the other end of the phone, speaking in a fairly thick foreign accent (well foreign to me since I live in the US), claims to be be calling from Microsoft’s support center or something along those lines and explaining that my computer is reporting problems to them.  Now the first thing to note, they claim to be calling from Microsoft, but the caller ID said “Dir Assist FL”?

Having worked in IT for more than 20 years, I can tell you that unless you are working an existing technical support case with Microsoft, they do not ever call you, not to tell you that your computer is reporting virus or malware activity.

While your computer may report some information to Microsoft, depending on how it is configured and assuming you are running a Windows operating system, it does not phone home like ET to report that you have a virus or other problem like that.

Unlike a normal person (according to Mama Bear), I find it amusing to screw with the people on the other end of the phone.  I am a firm believer in that if they call me, they are fair game, and the more of their time I can take up just costs them money and hopefully keeps them from calling someone else who might not know any better.  And apparently I am just a devious malicious human being. 😛

So after a few minutes of asking for information, him for my computer info (which I did not provide and neither should you) and me asking for things they could not know unless they really had access to my internal network (and had a clue where technology is concerned), telling him that sure I will play his little game and of course laughing all the time, the guy tells me this is serious and no game and he tells me the call is being recorded, so I told him thanks for reminding me “per state and federal regulations I have to inform you this call is being recorded and can be used for prosecution”.  Click….. hmm guess he didn’t like being told that either.

So if someone calls you claiming to be from Microsoft and telling you your computer is reporting anything, hang up the phone.  Unless of course you would like to take some frustration out on the person on the other end of the line, in which case enjoy yourself, be creative.  Remember, the more of his time you can take up, the more can you hurt the people who try these kinds of scams.
